Bountiful Bunnies!

Our neighbors with ‘keen eyes’, Zachary and Caleb (don’t think I spelled their names right.) made a spectacular find about an hour ago. Here is the story in greater detail.

We were eating spaghetti and chatting, when the doorbell rang. After jumping ten feet in the air from being so startled, I answered the door to find a frantic Caleb shouting, “EMMA! EMMA! HURRY COME HERE! OVER HERE WE FOUND A BABY BUNNY!” Sure enough, Zachary had a ball of fluff in a fishing net. Not taking my eyes off the now-trying-to-escape, young, brown, rabbit, I pointed back to my little sister, Grace, and asked her for some thick gloves. Now, the fuzzball had escaped and was darting along the grassy lawn. I easily caught it with Zack’s net and held it there until Gracie came running back for the second time with a right AND a left glove, as opposed to just right gloves (like the pair she had the first time…). I handled the delicate newborn with care and discovered that it had a HUMUNGOUS head.

(My stars that’s a HUGE head.)

Caleb chattered on and on. “Hey Emma! Wanna know how I found it?” Sure, why not? “I was walking…and-and I looked down….and-and I saw a…something brown, and almost stepped on a baby rabbit!!!” He’s super hyped now. After Caleb calms down and the rabbit escapes a few more times before being recaptured, we decide to see the reaction between the baby and Grace’s pet rabbit, Pinky(an albino, fat, old rabbit), but before we got there, we saw another brown figure, an adult rabbit. The mother! I got down on my knees, held out the baby, and yelled out WE HAVE YOU’RE BABY! PLEASE TAKE IT BAAAACK!!!!! With no hesitation, the leaner, older bunny bolted for safety somewhere over the rainbow. We then got no reaction from Pinky. Zack and eager Caleb showed me the hole where they found the kit and discovered more!  There were three in the den (Caleb still says four) and the one we had was the smallest. I dubbed it the runt of the litter immediately. They all had spots on their heads!

(Hard to see, but aren’t they just the CUTEST THING EVER?!)

The one kit we had joined its siblings in their nest and slept fitfully. We discussed the one problem, how would people not step on them again? Well, that problem never really got solved, but I am now the authoritative ’animal person’ of the cul-de-sac. (According to Zack’s grandma.) *Beams*

Well that’s about it! Hope you enjoyed. Special thanks to all children of the cul-de-sac.
